Heff Corp. was launched in 2020 by award-winning radio and podcast producer Liam Heffernan (that’s me, right there, looking all serious and talented but at the same time affable and easygoing).
I began my career in audio back in 2006, during my first year studying Film & TV Production at York St. John University. I volunteered at a local hospital radio station on evenings and weekends, and by 2008 I was working for BBC Radio York as a Broadcast Assistant. It was here I learned the important of both hitting deadlines at all costs and making a good cup of tea.
During my time at university I also generated some interest in launching YSJ’s first student radio station. Though it never quite got off the ground during my time there, within a few years they were even offering a radio production course. Does that make me a hero? It’s impossible to say. But yes.
Following three months travelling around the USA my academic journey continued and I studied my MA in American Studies at UEA, where I also had my own late night radio show on Livewire 1350. It was terrible.
After moving back down to Kent my career took a huge tangent. I launched and ran a film news website from 2013 – 2016 and subsequently freelanced for several sites as an Academy Awards expert until 2019. I also worked in a bank, crunching numbers and daydreaming about the day I could quit in spectacular fashion. That day has since passed, and I quit in an extraordinarily average way.
However, since 2017 my radio career was resuscitated when I joined the team at Hospital Radio Medway. In the years since, I have presented and produced several shows, even winning myself Gold at the National Hospital Radio Awards in 2021 for my Covid-19 documentary. Since taking over the award submissions, the station has been nominated for 7 awards, from which winning 2 golds, 1 silver and 1 bronze award.
